On February 17 and 18, 2018, Channel Islands Yacht Club hosted, for the 11th year in a row, the Mid-Winter Regatta for the ASBCYC area. The Regatta is sponsored by the Southern California Yachting Association.

We had 11 boats sign up on Regatta Network and ten boats participated, including a special fleet of J24’s, primarily from Ventura Yacht Club. The participating clubs are Ventura Yacht Club, Ventura Sailing Club, California Yacht Club, Santa Barbara Yacht Club, Channel Islands Yacht Club, Channel Islands Women’s Sailing Association and crew members from various yacht clubs throughout the area.

Over the two-day series, we ran five windward/leeward races with two classes, PHRF and J24. We used two power boats for the race committee, Hakuna Matata, owned by Rear Commodore Dewayne Weaver, and Valkryie, owned by Staff Commodore Frank Sullivan as the mark boat.

Our Race Chair was Jane Thomas and our PRO was Bill Brayton.
Members of the Race Committee on board both boats were Brenda Wilson, Brenda Ridenour, Bob Deyling, Cindy Arosteguy, Bob Ridenour, Harry Krum, Les Hardwick, Thomas Warden and CIYC Photographer Sharon Uhlig.

All races were started on time with no OCS, no recalls, and no protests. The wind conditions were 3 to 10 knot winds with a moderate swell reaching 1 to 2 feet. The second day, first race start was postponed due to lack of wind for approximately 30 minutes. The wind came up and we concluded our final two races on Sunday. The light wind conditions were especially challenging.

Following the first day of racing, the crew and skippers met at the CIYC bar for food and libations.

Following the races on Sunday, we retreated to the CIYC Clubhouse for an outstanding meatball and spaghetti dinner for all skippers and crew.

The awards dinner was prepared by CIYC members Evelina Arglen, George Arglen, Judi Pepper and John Defusco.

The SCYA awards ceremony was presented by SCYA Director Thomas Warden. Deke Klatt, the District Governor of District 16 for J24 race boats made a presentation to all J24 skippers and crews. He stated the races we held were the best turnout for J24’s in the past three years. Deke is also a J24 national champion sailor.

Over 200 photos and videos were taken on board by CIYC photographer, Sharon Mae Uhlig. These were displayed on the big screen at CIYC during the awards dinner for all to see. The photos and the videos are available at CIYC.com or for day one of racing CLICK HERE and for Day 2 of racing CLICK HERE
